Indoorsy Things to do in Washington D.C.

What to do on a rainy day in Washington D.C.? Hit the Mall, of course! Not the shopping mall (although that too has its own rainy day pleasures) but the National Mall. There are tons of guides to the Mall (here is one), so we’ll just name a few of our favorite museums: The National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (located just off the Mall), and the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Other ideas:

  • The Folger Shakespeare Library houses the largest collection of Shakespeare artifacts in the world, as well as manuscripts, books and art from the Renaissance era. You should also take a look at the Folger Theatre‘s schedule for upcoming plays.
  • Planet Word, the world’s first voice-activated museum, showcases the immense power of language through interactive exhibits. When you arrive, you are greeted by the Speaking Willow Tree, which murmurs in hundreds of languages as you pass through its branches. Very cool!
